SMITH ROCK HIKER RESCUED

Injured Hiker:Heather Peacock, 31 yo female, Portland, OR
NARRATIVE:
On the listed date and time, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a report of a hiker that slipped on the trail while hiking near Monkey Face. The hiker, Peacock, had attempted to access a view point on the west side of Smith Rock via a trail that leads to a lookout adjacent to the south side of Monkey Face.
11 DCSOSAR volunteers responded to the west side of the Crooked River where they were assisted across by Redmond Fire and their river raft.
Redmond Fire Medics and DCSOSAR hiked to the top of Smith Rock, to the view point where Peacock had been injured. See attached photos.
Peacock’s injures were assessed, then she was packaged into a wheeled litter. The trail is steep going down having about 10 switchbacks with many sections of small loose rocks. The process of bringing the wheeled litter down the steep slope took about an hour.
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind those who are recreating in these types of areas to ensure they have proper footwear and are being mindful of loose rock on steeper trails.
